The Pine Street Chinese Benevolent Association (PSCBA), home of the Pine Street Clinic, was established in 1982. In addition to seeing thousands of patients over the years, PSCBA has also launched numerous educational initiatives. Such programs include establishing the California Association for Acupuncture Tutorials, an education advocacy group; lecturing on Chinese medicine to audiences both at home (Marin General Hospital, UCSF, UC Berkeley, Marin Jewish Community Center, Alta Bates Hospital, the American Cancer Society) and abroad (in China, Germany, England, Switzerland, and Denmark); inventing PulsImagery, a computer-based Chinese pulse diagnostic system (research was published in the American Journal of Acupuncture and results reproduced by researchers at UC Berkeley); publishing books and articles; hosting a study group for classic Chinese texts, including the Dream of the Red Chamber and the Nan Jing; producing a play about and translating the formulas of Doc Hay, one of the first doctors of Chinese Medicine in the Western United States; and maintaining one of the largest private libraries of Chinese medical journals and texts in California.
